During May and June, Pengelly and Mizen Veterinary Surgeons are offering you...

FREE Nurse Dental Checks

More than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats suffer from some form of dental disease by the age of 3 years. Our Veterinary Nurses are specifically trained to advise on dental heath and diets. If special dental treatment is required, your pet will need to be booked in for a general anaesthetic.

Dental Treatment

On the day of the procedure you will be offered pre-operative blood tests at a reduced rate-25% off. This is to ensure than your pet's organs can properly process and eliminate an anaesthetic. The blood analysis is to confirm that your pets organs are funtioning fully and to find any hidden health conditions that could put your pet at risk. If the resutls are not normal we can alter the anaesthetic procedure or take other precautions to safeguards your pet's health. General anaesthesia leads to increased fluid loss from the animal's body, for this reason we are offering FREE intravenous fluids (worth £30), to aid a rapid recovery.

Dental Food

During these two months we are also offering our full range of dental foods for cats and dogs at 25% off. Also 25% off of our range of dental care products (including tooth brushes and tooth paste), and 25% off of dentagen chews (which help prevent tartar build up).

Holiday

We are also offering 25% off of your dog's kennel cough vaccination. This vacciantion is recommended if they are going into high risk situations, such as kennels and dogs shows, or for those that will walk in popular dog walking areas this summer. Fatalities are extrememly rare, but it is a very uncomfortable illness and upsetting for you and your beloved dog. Like our flu vaccines, it doesn't guarantee full immunity to every strain. Howere, it is very effective at reducing the severity of infection from an y new strain. However it is very effective at reducing the severity of infection from  any new strains, as well as preventing the strains we already know about. This vacciantion is a nasal aerosol, so no need for a needle!

All dogs will by law, have to be microchipped by the 6th April 2016.

We are also pleased to announce that we can now vaccainte agaisnt a deadly disease called Leishmaniosis, wich is safe, effective and long lasting. Leishmaniosis is usually transmitted by infected snadflies 'mosquito'-like insects. Dogs that travel abroad are particually at risk. (2.5 million dogs in Europe are infected wiht the Leishmania parastie). It is often untreatable and incurable once contracted. Sandflies also transmit this deadly infection from dogs to humans.

Vaccination Amnesty

JUNE 2013

We are very lucky in the 21st century to have such reliable and safe vaccinations avaliable for our pets. Regular vaccination has led to a reduction in the cases of diseases that used to be commonplace, often claiming the lives of the animals involved and leading to outbreaks of disease. Vaccination of your pet not only provides good protection for them if they meet these bugs in the great outdoors, but helps maintain herd immunity. This means that if a high proportion of animals are vaccinated, certain diseases have a reduced reservoir in the aniaml population, so become rare. By vaccinating you are not only protecting your animal but helping to protect others as well.
If you have a dog or cat that has not recieved a booster vaccination in the last 18 months, they would need to have a primary and booster vaccine in order for them to remain protected. If you bring your pet in for vaccination during June, we will provide both of these vacines for the price of a booster alone.
Please contact the practice to make an appointment for your pet or, if your pets are happily up to date with their vaccinations you could mention this amnesty to other owners whilst out on your walks etc.
In addition to recieving the relevant vaccines, your pet will also recieve a FREE full health check. Don't forget about all the other numerous benefits of having your pet vaccinated with us- as listed on your booster reminder letter.

Diseases That We Commonly Vaccinate Dogs Against Are:

PARVOVIRUS-this nasty illness attacks vulnerable dogs; such as puppies or those with an impaired immune system. It produces haemorrhagic diarhoea, vomitting and in severe cases may supress the bone marrow and damage the heart.
DISTEMPER- another viral condition that causes a high fever, respiratory and gut problems as well as neurological signs such as a lack of balance (ataxia) and head pressing. The disease is often fatal.
HEPATITS- canine viral hepatitis affects the liver and can lead to the dog becoming jaundice, vomitting and feeling very unwell.
LEPTOSPIROSIS- this is transmitted via urine, some strains can be caught from water contaminated by rat urine. The parasite involved attacks the liver and the kidneys requiring aggressive treatment.

Diseases That We Commonly Vaccinate Cats Against Are:

PANULEUCOPENIA VIRUS-this is a simular virus to the one that causes 'parvo' in dogs. It attacks the fastest growing cells in the body, thsoe of the gastrointestinal tract and those of the immune system. Animals become sick, not only from the virus itself, but from other opportunistic infections. It is not commonly seen today due to good vaccination cover.
CAT FLU- this involves several viruses which act together to cause ulceration of the eyes and mouth, conjunctivitis, gingivitis and upper respiratory signs. Young cats are particularly susceptible to this infection and may show some or all of the above signs. It is an infection that is more common in crowded situations such as breeding colonies.
FELINE LEUKAEMIA- this virus is spread via saliva. The main route of transmission is from fighting. It is common in stray cats and entire tomcats that roam. We strongly recommend that any cats that are allowed outside are vaccinated agaisnt this virus.
